Kyle was born in Calgary, Alberta and as you'd guess at one time he was a bit of rink rat, making his parents drag themselves out of bed on the weekends to drive him to various arenas around Calgary so he could pursue Canada's favourite sport... hockey.

Thankfully, that dream didn't last too long...

Kyle Shewfelt began his record-breaking gymnastics career in 1988 when his mother enrolled him at the Altadore Gymnastics Club in Calgary. Kyle got his first taste of international competition at meets in Austria and Hungary in 1996 and by the late 1990s was beginning to make his mark on the international scene.

Following his first Olympic experience in Sydney 2000, Kyle began to establish his international star with multiple medals at the 2002 Commonwealth Games, a pair of bronze medals at the 2003 World Championships and a series of victories on the World Cup circuit leading up to the 2004 Olympics.

Kyle's ultimate goal was achieved on Sunday, August 22, 2004 in Athens, Greece when he captured Canada's first ever Olympic medal in artistic gymnastics with his Gold medal performance in the floor exercise.

Following the Olympics, Kyle took a year-long break away from the competitive scene to establish new gymnastic goals, drink some beer and to spread his positive message about the Olympics across the Country.

Healthy and focused, Kyle made a triumphant return to competition in 2006 with podium performances around the world. Highlights included multiple Commonwealth Games medals, a bronze medal and best ever 6th place team finish at the World Championships and a silver medal at the prestigious World Cup Finals to conclude his brilliant season.

During a routine training session at the 2007 World Championships in Stuttgart, Germany, Kyle suffered a devastating injury, breaking both of his legs after he misjudged a landing.

Determined to contribute to his team's performance to qualify Canada for the Beijing Olympics, Kyle opted to stay in Germany to support his teammates from the sidelines for the entirety of the competition. They qualified.

Now back in Calgary, Kyle is embarking on the biggest comeback of his athletic career. He is committed to returning to competition in top form. At a press conference following his September 7th surgery, he stated, "I am dedicated and excited about contributing solid performances to Team Canada in Beijing. The recovery process is going to be hard, but I am going to attack it with the same diligence that I apply to my competition preparation."

Kyle is a man on a mission. His vision is clear. He wants to lead his team to a history making performance at the 2008 Olympic Games. And of course, he is also looking forward to being at his personal best once again in Beijing.
